1971-1975
As an undergraduate at UVM, I was a member of the Experimental Program in the Arts & Science college, with an undecided major, then in my Junior year I majored in Art Education (my dad said I needed a degree in which I could get a job!).
I spent my Junior summer studying Art History in Greece.
1975-1978
I was a high school art teacher in Hampton NH and Richford VT. Teaching was OK, but I really wanted to be doing art-like work, so I started exploring the field of Graphic Design. At the time it was sort of a mystery career, and I had to explain to my family what it was. During my summers off from teaching, I took Graphic Design classes at Mass. College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, and applied to Grad schools.
1978-1981
I spent three years obtaining my Masters of Art in Graphic Design at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign while working as TA in the Art department. It was a great program, with great training for the Graphics field.
1981-1999
Luck, lots of resume sending, and a great interview outfit was working for me as I was offered a job as a designer in the office of Page, Arbitrio, and Resen, a prominent Graphic Design firm in Manhattan. In those days there were no computer graphics, everything was done by hand, and with various photographers, illustrators, and type shops adding their skills. Long hours but pretty fun job. I lived in Manhattan for the first year in a crummy split-studio apartment, but moved to the suburbs of Westchester and spent many years riding the train to Grand Central Station.
I married my husband David Ingerman (fellow UVMer) in 1991 and moved to Northport (Long Island) NY and to an even longer commute to Manhattan. In 1992 my son Edward was born and I resigned my job to raise him full time. I taught myself the various software programs for graphic design and began taking some freelance design jobs when Eddie was around four years old.
1999-Present
We moved from Northport to Chittenden VT and continue to live and work here. My husband has a marketing communications business so I do design work with him for various clients. My son graduated from Rutland High in 2010 as a National Merit Scholar (Mom’s got to brag!) and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois as a mechanical engineer. He is currently working in Chicago and lives in the Chicago suburbs.
I’ve really enjoyed reading about other members of our class and hope more people will write updates!
